Why
Does Cossack Need to be Developed?
Over
the past four years the town of Cossack and Jarman Island have incurred considerable cost to the Shire of Roebourne in respect to ongoing management
and restoration of historical buildings, the salary of a site manager
and allocation
of staff to manage the site and surrounding area.
The estimated
cost of maintaining the town is approximately $200,000 per
annum. Unlike other towns in the Shire, Cossack generates minimal return
for this
outlay. Aside from a Caretaker, there are currently no permanent residents
in
Cossack and tourism has not been developed to a stage where there is
financial
benefit for the Shire.
It is the
Shire's intention therefore to develop Cossack so it may be a
self-sustaining town.
With
its plentiful land, scenic beauty, eco-tourism features and marine
attractions, the historic town of Cossack is well placed for a revival
in the
21st century. Key elements of this historic town and Jarman Island
have
been saved and restored to give locals and visitors a unique insight
into
early Australian history. With its variety of authentic historical,
cultural
and natural attractions, Cossack has the potential to be not only
a great
place to live, but also a stimulus for the coastal tourism industry
of the
Central Pilbara region.
